In the summer of 2021, the National Park Service awarded AACON the renovation project entitled Look Rock Campground Rehabilitation for Repair / Alteration of Real Property located in Tallassee, Tennessee nestled in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Look Rock Campground consists of sixty-eight camping sites with the added convenience of flush toilets, drinking water, and a dump station. lity systems failed. In 2019, the park received funds to install a handicap-accessible vault toilet which allowed the reopening of the picnic area with limited services.
Construction commenced with the installation of new underground electrical distribution and replacing approximately 11,000 linear feet of 3” and 6” existing waterlines with HDPE piping. Once completed, the underground electrical distribution lines were routed from existing overhead power lines to four Comfort Stations and campsite pedestals located throughout the campground. After completing the rehabilitation of an existing 100,000-gallon concrete water tank for the underground potable water system, water lines were routed to the four Comfort Stations, campsite water hookups, and sanitary dump station located within the campground
Once underground electrical and water infrastructure activities were completed, demolition and new construction of the existing asphalt pavement and aggregate sub-base throughout the campground were performed. This was a demolition and new construction of A five-inch aggregate base course, three-inch asphalt surface layer, and three-quarter-inch thin lift surface treatment was installed on the main road and RV pull-off sites. In addition, paved waterways were installed and shoulder reconditioning consisting of an aggregate/topsoil mixture was performed on both sides of the asphalt roadway. Reconditioned shoulders received a hydroseed mixture in order to achieve the required ground cover and comply with restoration objectives.
AACON performed interior renovations of the four Comfort Stations in conjunction with the asphalt paving and shoulder reconditioning activities. The Look Rock Campground project is AACON’s twenty-eight project with the National Park Service with contract completion scheduled for the end of February 2024.
