AACON General Contractors recently completed the design-build construction of the Bodau Gate Canopy for the U.S. Air Force, following the Notice to Proceed issued on March 13, 2023. This project required detailed coordination across multiple trades and showcased AACON’s ability to deliver complex infrastructure improvements within active base environments.
As the prime contractor, AACON managed four specialized subcontractors to complete a wide range of scopes, including excavation, pier drilling, concrete placement, masonry wrapping, structural steel erection, light pole foundation replacement, underground demolition, trenching, water meter relocation, CCTV installation, and canopy lighting integration.
During construction, the project scope was modified to extend the schedule in order to relocate a water meter that conflicted with the new structural steel column placement near the existing guard shack. Once demolition and site preparation were complete, the team began constructing the new canopy structure directly over the existing guard shack—featuring dark bronze steel trusses and columns paired with colonial red standing-seam aluminum roofing panels that complement the guard shack’s architectural design.
To complete the modernization, AACON installed new canopy lighting, CCTV systems, and traffic control devices, all fully integrated with the guard shack’s existing control systems. The final touch—a seamless masonry brick wrap around the steel columns—ensures the new structure blends perfectly with the existing facility’s appearance.
