AACON General Contractors delivered a comprehensive Design–Build roof replacement for the Kansas City VA Medical Center’s Honor Annex, a fully operational healthcare facility serving thousands of veterans each year. This $2.13 million project required precise phasing, strict safety controls, and seamless communication with VA stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted operations throughout construction.
The scope included complete demolition of the existing 23,800 SF built-up roof, removal of all associated materials, and preparation of the structural deck for a new high-performance John’s Manville (JM) roofing system. AACON installed new multi-ply bituminous roofing, upgraded insulation assemblies, replaced roof drains, and integrated new HVAC condensate piping and exhaust fan components. All work was performed to manufacturer specifications and VA Master Construction Standards to ensure long-term system durability and energy efficiency.
A major component of this project involved designing and installing a new Lightning Protection System (LPS). AACON bonded the LPS to the electrical grounding system, protected all exterior circuits from lightning and static discharge, and successfully completed third-party witness testing and manufacturer certification in accordance with NFPA 780 requirements. This system ensures enhanced safety and operational resilience for the Honor Annex facility.
Mechanical improvements included replacing roof curbs, installing new copper condensate piping, and implementing an Indoor Air Quality Management Plan (IAQMP) to protect occupants during construction. AACON followed the VA’s Infection Control Plan, isolating and removing sensitive HVAC components to prevent contamination while maintaining normal building operations. Once installation was complete, the HVAC systems underwent full testing, adjusting, balancing (TAB), and commissioning to confirm optimal performance.
This project highlights AACON’s ability to execute complex roofing, mechanical, and electrical upgrades in an occupied federal healthcare setting. Through disciplined planning, rigorous quality control, and close coordination with VA leadership, AACON delivered a safe, compliant, and long-lasting roofing solution that enhances the facility’s performance, safety, and resilience.
